Lennox Heat Pump Service Nationwide

Lennox Heat Pump Service: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Lennox heat pump repair in Houston typically runs $150-$650 installed, depending on which component fails and your model series. We stock Lennox-compatible parts for the XP, XP25, and Merit series on our trucks, and most repairs are completed same day. If your system is blowing cold air in heat mode, short-cycling, or making grinding noises from the outdoor unit, the culprit is usually the reversing valve, compressor, or a failed capacitor - all fixable without a full system replacement.

Most Houston homeowners figure out something’s wrong in one of three ways: the house won’t hold temperature during a Gulf Coast cold snap, the electric bill spikes $80-$150 overnight, or the outdoor unit starts sounding like a washing machine with a brick in it. We’ve seen all three across every Lennox series sold in Harris County since the mid-1980s.

Which Lennox Models This Applies To

Lennox uses three main heat pump designations, and the part you need depends on which badge is on your outdoor unit. The Merit series (14HPX, 16HPX) uses standard-scroll compressors with single-stage reversing valves. The Elite series (XP16, XP20) steps up to two-stage scroll compressors and a more complex valve assembly. The Signature Collection (XP25) runs a variable-capacity inverter drive - completely different compressor architecture, and the control board has to be matched to the specific software revision.

Here’s where owners get tripped up: the model number on the outside cabinet doesn’t always tell you which revision is inside. Lennox changed compressor suppliers mid-cycle on some 2016-2019 XP16 units, and the bolt patterns don’t interchange. We check the serial number against Lennox’s service bulletin database before we roll - saves everyone a second trip.

We carry OEM Lennox parts where they’re still available, and we source quality aftermarket equivalents from manufacturers like Copeland and Emerson when OEM lead times stretch past a week. For a 14HPX capacitor or contactor, aftermarket is fine and cuts your cost 20-30%. For an XP25 inverter board, we stick with Lennox factory - the software handshake is too finicky to risk.

Fireside Heating & Air Co. of Houston is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Lennox Corporation, though our journeymen are factory-trained on their systems.

Signs Your Lennox Heat Pump Service Is Failing

  • Heat mode blows cold air, but cooling works fine. This points to a stuck or leaking reversing valve. The valve shifts refrigerant direction between heat and cool modes, and Houston’s temperature swings - 40°F one morning, 75°F by afternoon - cycle that valve hard through shoulder seasons.
  • Outdoor unit hums but the compressor never kicks on. Usually a failed start capacitor or a locked compressor. Capacitors degrade faster in Houston’s heat and humidity; we replace more of them in July and August than all other months combined.
  • System short-cycles: runs three minutes, shuts off, repeats. Could be a failing defrost board, low refrigerant from a leak, or a thermostat losing its heat anticipator setting. In older Lennox units around the Heights and Garden Oaks, we find refrigerant leaks at the copper line flare connections - vibration from I-45 traffic doesn’t help.
  • Loud grinding or screeching from the outdoor fan. Bearing failure in the condenser fan motor. Left alone, it’ll seize and take the blade with it. We stock rescue motors that fit most Lennox cabinets; the swap takes about 90 minutes.
  • Ice buildup on the outdoor coil in winter. Normal defrost should clear this every 30-90 minutes. If ice stays, your defrost sensor or board has failed. We’ve replaced dozens in Memorial and Bellaire after the February 2021 freeze exposed weak points in older sensor wiring.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Lennox heat pump service costs in Houston, parts and labor included:

Capacitor or contactor replacement $150-$280
Reversing valve replacement $450-$650
Compressor replacement (single-stage) $1,800-$3,200
Defrost board or sensor $280-$450
Fan motor replacement $320-$550
Full diagnostic and refrigerant check Included with repair

The wide ranges come down to accessibility - some Lennox units are crammed against alley fences in Montrose backyards with six inches of clearance - and whether we need to recover and recharge refrigerant. We quote one number before we start, and that’s the number on the invoice. Our 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the labor and the part; if anything fails in that window, we fix it free, no paperwork, no arguing.

Senior and veteran homeowners take 5% off any repair. If your last company handed you a written estimate, we’ll give you a free second opinion.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things you can check safely: confirm the thermostat is set to “heat” and the fan to “auto,” make sure the outdoor unit isn’t blocked by leaves or debris, and verify the breaker hasn’t tripped. Beyond that, heat pumps run 240-volt electrical and handle refrigerant under pressure. A reversing valve replacement requires brazing, vacuum pull-down, and precise refrigerant charging - get any of it wrong and you’ve bought yourself a new compressor.

We’ve been called to homes in Spring Branch and Sharpstown where a well-meaning owner watched a video, released refrigerant into the atmosphere (which is federal violation), and still had to call us to finish the job. The fix cost double what it would have. If you’re not sure, call us. We’ll tell you what it’s doing, and we’ll tell you what it needs. No charge for the straight talk.
