Rheem Heat Pump Service Nationwide

Rheem Heat Pump Service: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Rheem heat pump service in Houston typically runs $150-$650 for most repairs, and we carry Rheem-compatible parts on our trucks for same-day completion. Most calls we get are from homeowners who’ve noticed their system struggling through a humid Houston afternoon, or worse, blowing cold air when the heat’s supposed to be on. If your Rheem’s acting up, the fix is usually straightforward once we know the model and what’s failing.

We see a lot of Rheem units out here, especially in neighborhoods like Spring Branch and the older builds around the Heights, where heat pumps have been the practical choice for decades. The combination of hot, sticky summers and those occasional hard freezes we get now means these systems work harder than the manufacturer ever planned. That’s not a knock on Rheem, it’s just Houston.

Fireside Heating & Air Co. of Houston is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Rheem. We’ve simply worked on enough of their equipment over 42 years to know what fails, what to keep stocked, and how to get you running without a lot of back-and-forth.

Which Rheem Models This Applies To

Rheem’s heat pump lineup breaks down into a few main series you’ll see around Harris County. The Classic Series (RP14, RP15, RP16) and the Classic Plus (RP17, RP18) are the workhorses in most homes built between the mid-90s and about 2015. The Prestige Series (RP20, RP20 EcoNet) started showing up more after that, especially in newer construction past Beltway 8. Each series uses different control boards, reversing valves, and compressor specs, so matching the right part matters.

The model and serial number live on a metal tag inside the electrical compartment, usually on the side of the outdoor unit. Write down the full model number, not just the series name. An RP14-36 won’t use the same contactor or defrost board as an RP20-60, and the refrigerant lines are sized differently too. We’ve seen homeowners order what looked like the right part online only to find the mounting bracket’s off by half an inch or the electrical connections don’t match.

For OEM versus aftermarket, Rheem-branded parts come with the factory warranty but cost more and sometimes take days to source. We carry quality aftermarket equivalents on the truck for most common failures, same fit and function, backed by our 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s a compressor or a proprietary EcoNet board, we’ll go OEM every time. For contactors, capacitors, or defrost sensors, the aftermarket part we stock is what we’d put in our own mother’s house.

Signs Your Rheem Heat Pump Service Is Failing

  • Outdoor unit’s running but the air inside feels lukewarm. Usually points to a stuck reversing valve or low refrigerant charge. The reversing valve switches your Rheem between heating and cooling mode, and Houston’s temperature swings can wear out the solenoid faster than in milder climates.
  • Ice building up on the outdoor coil, even when it’s 50 degrees outside. This is a defrost system failure, nine times out of ten. The defrost board, sensor, or the reversing valve itself isn’t kicking the unit into defrost mode. Left alone, that ice damages the coil fins and works the compressor to death.
  • System short-cycling, turning on and off every few minutes. Weak capacitor, failing contactor, or an overheating compressor pulling itself offline. In Houston’s heat, capacitors dry out faster than the national average. We replace more of them in July and August than the rest of the year combined.
  • Loud humming or grinding from the outdoor unit, but the fan’s not spinning. Often the fan motor’s seized or the capacitor can’t deliver enough juice to start it. The motor’s working against high head pressure on those 95-degree days, which accelerates bearing wear.
  • Heat pump blows cold air in heat mode, or the auxiliary heat keeps running. Could be a refrigerant leak, a failed reversing valve, or the outdoor unit’s simply not producing enough heat. When the backup electric strips run constantly, your bill doubles and the system’s telling you something’s wrong upstream.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Most Rheem heat pump repairs in Houston fall between $150 and $650, installed. Where you land depends on the part, the refrigerant type, and how long we need to diagnose it properly.

Common Repair Parts + Labor Range Typical Time
Capacitor or contactor $150-$300 1 hour
Fan motor (outdoor) $350-$650 1.5-2 hours
Reversing valve $450-$650 2-3 hours
Defrost board or sensor $200-$450 1-1.5 hours
Refrigerant leak repair + recharge $350-$650 2-3 hours

The price we quote is the price you pay. We don’t charge extra for after-hours calls, and we don’t find “surprise” problems once we’re in the door. Every repair comes with our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something’s not right, we make it right. No paperwork to fill out, no arguing with a dispatcher.

Current offers that apply: $50 off any repair over $250, and our standing Senior & Veteran 5% discount. If you’ve got another company’s written estimate, we’ll give you a free second opinion.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things a homeowner can safely check before calling. Make sure your thermostat’s set correctly and the filter’s clean. Verify the breaker hasn’t tripped, and that the outdoor unit’s not blocked by leaves or grass clippings. That’s about it.

Everything else involves high voltage, refrigerant under pressure, or both. A heat pump capacitor stores enough charge to stop your heart even after the power’s off. Refrigerant lines run at pressures that can cause serious injury if you’re not trained and equipped. And if you open the system to air without pulling a proper vacuum, you’ve just bought yourself a compressor replacement down the road.

We’ve been called out to fix the “fix” more times than we can count. Usually costs more than the original repair would have. If you’re not certain what you’re looking at, call us at (833) 313-7291. We’ll tell you what it’s doing, and we’ll tell you what it needs.
